DIY Painted Buffalo Check Doormat
They say “step on a crack, break your mothers back”, but what about painting a crack? When you own an older home, cracks just come with the territory! And when it comes to my front porch, cracks are a plenty! Usually, I just throw a mat down to cover them up; but this time, I decided to paint a DIY semi-permanent buffalo check mat down instead and it turned out great!

First things first. I got out all the supplies I would need >>>see them under “Shop the Project” section under "shop" on the website. Then, I taped off the section of the porch for the mat, measuring to make sure it would be large enough to put a second mat inside and still leave a couple inches showing around the edges. Next, I painted the base of the matte white. Oops! Don’t forget to first clean your space thoroughly, notice my handy broom in the corner?

I taped down the farmhouse stencil in the middle of the large, white square and proceeded to add the buffalo check stenciling all the way around it, tamping down the black paint as I went. Making sure to overlap the buffalo check pattern as I went was the hardest part of the entire project! (Oh, that and waiting for the paint to dry—lol). Lastly, I went back and filled in the farmhouse stencil in the center and removed all of the painters tape to reveal my new painted DIY doormat. The entire video tutorial is below.
This project turned out great and I added the “thankful” mat on top, but cannot wait to change out my door mats with the seasons or leave it with just the farmhouse in the middle, which is super cute, too! I truly hope that y’all try this on your front porch. Disclaimer: This project included all of my porch’s current cracks. I think they added character don’t you? See below.
